FAQ: [By Wishtrend] Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water

by Gina Myung on Jun 14, 2018

The skin is constantly repairing itself, duplicating its cells and creating new skin. This means that with time, there is also a constant buildup of dead skin that lays on the outer barrier of the skin. Putting in the time to use a face exfoliator to regularly remove these unnecessary dead cells that weight down our skin can not only improve the look and feel of our skin, but also maximize the effectiveness of the skincare products we apply afterwards. But, when it comes to exfoliating, many of us have a tendency to over-exfoliate in hopes of seeing more of the benefits associated with it. While gentle exfoliation can work to improve the skin’s texture and tone for and an overall more healthy complexion, using products that are overly harsh on the skin is one of the biggest mistakes we can make. In general it’s hard to find a face exfoliator that isn’t too much for the skin, but actually works. So, for those of you looking for a gentle everyday face exfoliator, the By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water has your back.

2. Q&A

Since its release last year, the Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water - nicknamed the ‘mandelic water’ for short - continues to receive much love as a gentle but effective face exfoliator. While many of you have come to become familiar with the mandelic water, a lot of you continue to ask questions regarding the product. In hopes of helping you become more acquainted with the ups and downs of the mandelic water, we’ve gathered and answered the most frequently asked questions!

Q1. What are the main ingredients?

AAside from mandelic acid of course, the Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water also contains a number of ingredients to boost its nourishing power. Centella asiatica delivers its soothing powers to the skin to help regenerate damaged skin, Vitamin B5 functions to moisturize and prevent itchiness and inflammation, hyaluronic acid maintains the skin’s moisture levels to also ensure that the skin stays healthy and plump, while beta-glucan reduces the redness and inflammation association with exfoliating, and soothes the skin for a comfortable complexion.

Q2. I have sensitive, acne-prone skin. Can I use this?

A. Yes! Normally when we think of acids, we think of irritating, harsh products that cause our skin to get red and irritated. Generally this is the case for face exfoliators that get their power from glycolic acid or citric acid as these two acids have small particles that can easily penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, causing irritation for those with sensitive skin. However, mandelic acid is unique in that while it is equally as effective in exfoliating as the two previously mentioned acids, it has a larger particle size that doesn’t penetrate into the deeper more sensitive layers of the skin. This means less irritation, making it perfect for all skin types, even sensitive!

Q3. I’m allergic to nuts. Can I use this?

A. Yes! Because food and skin allergies don’t always correlate, the fact that you’re allergic to nuts doesn’t rule out mandelic acid from your skincare routine. The allergic reactions from nut consumption are caused by proteins, but mandelic acid is not a protein, therefore should be safe for use! However, as with any skincare product, we recommend testing a small amount of product on your wrist to see its compatibility with your skin.

Q4. What is the main function?

A. You can think of the Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water as an all-in-one face exfoliator. It not only improves the skin’s texture, brighten the skin toner, and nourish the complexion, it exfoliates away dead skin for a more radiant appearance. The mandelic water also carries anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties, making it effective on acne as well.

Q5. Does it help rosacea/ enlarged pores/ pigmentation/ wrinkles?

A. Unfortunately, the mandelic water doesn’t work to directly solve the issues of rosacea, enlarged pores, pigmentation and wrinkles, but continuous use will help to better the overall elasticity and health of the skin, reducing the appearance of pores and wrinkles. It also contains soothing ingredients like centella asiatica to soothe redness of rosacea, and gently exfoliates to give an overall brighter tone to the skin to counteract pigmentation.

Q6. Do I use this in place of toner?

A. Yes and no. While the mandelic water is not a toner, depending on if you feel that your skin needs the extra layer of hydration and protection that a toner provides, you can choose to use the mandelic water during the step you would toner, and skip toner as a whole. This is because the mandelic water, while it’s considered an exfoliator, works to also prep the skin as a toner would for skincare products applied afterwards.

Q7. What’s the best way to apply this?

A. The best way to see the full effects of the mandelic water is to use it with a cotton pad to gently wipe the skin. The gentle physical action will help to draw away debris, dead skin, and other impurities from the skin.

Q8. What products should I stay away from when using this?

A. Because of the exfoliating properties of the mandelic water, we recommend staying clear of AHAs, BHAs, other acids, vitamin C, and other exfoliants. If you feel the need to use another exfoliant, or acid product, we recommend doing so on a different say, or a different routine than when you used the mandelic water. But remember that this varies according to the percentage of the ingredients. Unless there is high concentration of AHA, you can incroporate BHA in the routine, however, always make sure to wear sunscreen after the skincare routine and we recommend to use AHA and BHA in your night time routine.

Q9. Can I use this everyday?

A. Yes! You can use the mandelic water everyday. However, we recommend you start out using it 2-3 times a week, at night only, and gradually increase the amount of times you incorporate it into your routine. While it has a gentle formula, it does still deliver a small amount of irritation on the skin due to its exfoliating properties.

Q10. What skincare products should I use before and after this?

A. For both your morning and nigh time routine, we recommend using the mandelic water at the first step of your skincare routine after cleansing. Then, to follow up, use a toner, serum and essence, and moisturizer as you normally would to ensure that the skin is moisturized and soothed.
