#InThisTogether: Wearing Masks, Why it Matters & How to Do It Right

by Wendy Kim on Sep 07, 2020

It has been about 8 months since we have witnessed the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. We are now witnessing another second wave as some cities are reopening while some cities are still advising social distancing. Amidst the crisis, the world is adjusting to the new norm in many different aspects of life.
One of the major keywords during this crisis was 'wearing masks' and while some countries in North East Asia were used to the idea of wearing masks, for some it is quite a new habit that will take a bit of a time to get used to and accept it as the new norm. And not too long ago, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that all citizens wear nonmedical face masks to slow the spread of Covid-19And now we are witnessing a flood of different types of masks out in the market, and we struggle asking questions like, ‘is it alright to wear cloth masks’?, ‘what is the best way to do face coverings?’ ‘How does wearing masks help prevent the spread?’.  So, to celebrate the new Organic Hemp Face Mask from By Wishtrend, let’s get answers to some of these questions.

Wearing Masks, Why it Matters?

To put it simple first, it is for 'source control'.Face mask is a crucial part of an infection control strategy to eliminate cross-contamination. According to the CDC, in the US, this recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows masks reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through the release of particulates and germs emitted through talks, coughs, sneezed and direct contact. So remember this: if you have to be in a setting where you must be in close contact with others or where social distancing is difficult to maintain, wear a mask. Wearing-Masks-Insert-Image-2

“Wearing a mask is good for two reasons: It’s going to cut down 95 percent of the breathing that sends the virus up to 6 feet away in a room, and also will reduce fecal/oral transmission by preventing the virus from getting into your nose or mouth” if you touch a contaminated surface and then your face, I think this will slow down the virus a lot.” (from Healthline)

  • Remember THIS: Major tips on how to wear and use masks properly!
  • • Wash your hands before and after putting on your mask
  • • Wear the mask over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin
  • • Try to fit it snugly against the sides of your face and don't have gaps
  • • Make sure you wear a mask that you can breath easily
  • • If your skin gets easily sensitive or irritated, take closer look at the material of the mask (even with anti-bacterial property)
  • • At times when you have to remove your mask, make sure the inner surface of the mask doesn't touch unsanitary surface
  • • Carry a pouch that you can store your mask whenever you have to remove the mask
  • • Keep your hands away from touching the outer surface of the mask (if you ever do, wash your hands with soap)
