#wishtrender: Meet Sharla in Japan, Who is Making Cruelty-Free a Lifestyle

  • 💙 Hi! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hi I’m Sharla! I was born and raised in Victoria, Canada, but have spent the past 16 years living and working in Japan. My main passion is my YouTube channel where I share my daily life, my experiences living in Japan long-term, and some of my favourite lesser-known travel locations from around the country! 

  • 💙 What drew you Japanese culture, and ultimately to working and living in the country?

I randomly chose Japanese as an elective language course in high school and it all started from there! 

  • 💙 Your YouTube channels have really taken off. What inspired you to first become active?

It all started as a university project actually! I didn’t expect any strangers to watch, haha. When my videos started to pick up in popularity, I was really shocked! I figured I better step up my quality if all these people are going to be watching what I’m making, so I started to aim my content towards anyone who was interested in learning about Japan! #wishtrender-sharla-insert-image2 

  • 💙 How is life in Japan treating you?

I’ve been lucky to have so much freedom with my job, which allows me to explore the country a lot. I think I’ve got just two more prefectures left to visit! I love the variety of scenery here - busy cities, quiet farm towns, mountainous volcano ranges, there’s really something for everyone! 

  • 💙 We’ve heard that you’ve also lived in Korea for a few years. How would you say living in Korea was different from your living experience in Japan?

Living in South Korea was such an exciting experience for me. I was so happy to be in an environment where everything was new. I was constantly learning about something, the language, the food, the traditional holidays - I really enjoyed my time there. 

  • 💙 We noticed that on top of your content regarding Japan (and Korea), you also frequently talk about skincare. What does your day and night skincare routine look like?

  • 💙 Would you say living in Korea has changed your approach to skincare, and if so, how?

Korea really opened up my eyes to the variety of skincare products that are available! It was a whole new world to me. I found Korean skincare to be extremely high quality, yet somehow still really affordable. I had so much fun trying out new things and finding a way to incorporate them into my daily routine. 

 

  • 💙 What’s a ride-or-die beauty tip you want to share with your fellow Wishtrenders?

Moisturize! Even if you have oily skin! I noticed the amount of oil my skin was producing actually calmed down after I started using more moisturizing products - game changer!

  • 💙 How did your journey with Wishtrend first start?

My friend was actually working with the company and asked if I would want to try some products out. (Thank you Bronwyn, honestly changed my life! haha) 

 

  • 💙 As a long time Wishtrender, what’s your favorite project of ours that you worked with us on?

I loved the Stay Beagley Project! The collaboration items that were created for the promotion were so adorable, and I was proud to spread the word for such a nice cause. 

 

  • 💙 What would you say is the most rewarding part of working with Wishtrend?

As someone who struggled with serious acne for years, Wishtrend skincare has changed my life so much. Reading feedback from my viewers who say it’s done the same for them is so lovely!
