by Wendy Kim on Dec 18, 2019

The third episode of 2019 Winter Skincare Series! So far, we have covered oily skin and dry skin and learned how to help our skin survive the harsh winter weather. Today, I wanted to talk about 'acne prone winter skincare'. Acne is not just restricted to a specific skin type but is rather a skin concern that is found regardless of your skin type. So, here are some skincare tips to remember in winter whenever you have acne! winter skincare series acne prone skin cover imageDuring winter, in addition to your ordinary skincare routine you go for when you have acne, it is important to keep the following 5 rules in mind: 1) focus on the ingredient, 2) antioxidant & anti-inflammation care, 3) hydrate the inner layers of the skin, 4) calming care is necessary and 5) make sure to prevent acne scars & spots.

A. Stick to the ingredient that works on your acne

If you have experience with acne you'll probably have your go-to ingredient that you turn to whenever you have acne. Ingredients that are effective and positive for acne will be those that carry anti-bacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, or those with calming and gentle exfoliating properties. Yet not every ingredient will work perfectly on your skin and that is why it's important to find the ingredient that you can count on when you struggle with acne. One of the ingredient beloved by acne prone skin is 'mugwort'. Mugwort  might not be the most familiar ingredient outside of Asia, however for those who have been keeping an eye on the skincare industry, mugwort is considered as a holy grail ingredient for acne and skin troubles. A little more detail on mugwort : Mugwort extract has the powerful ability to detox the skin by pulling toxins out from the blood thanks to its multitude of antioxidants and vitamins. Not only that, Mugwort has hormonal balancing effects that when applied to the skin, can aid in the treatment of hormonal acne breakouts. Its powerful skin calming and healing effects also can be used in treating adult acne, irritation, redness, and rough skin.

B. Give skin antioxidant & anti-inflammation care

When it comes to acne, antioxidant and anti-inflammation care is very important. Using the right ingredient is the number one priority for this care but it is also important to use the right method and the right skincare product. Wash-off mask is not a must on your every day skincare routine, however, on days when your skin is struggling with excessive oil or excessive dead skin cells, rather than reaching out for a scrub or a chemical exfoliator that you are not used to, a wash-off mask that will deliver antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effect and balance oli level will be a great choice. Leave it on the skin for a good 10-15 minutes for deep nourishment care and wash off with luke warm water.

  1. C. Focus hydrating the inner layers of the skin

Especially in winter, there are many times when skin feel dry not only on the outer layer of the skin but also dehydrated within. Leaving skin dehydrated can be a cause of skin breakouts because the skin will naturally produce more oil to protect the skin from drying out. So make sure to give enough time for deep hydration and one of the easy and effective way to do so is 'sheet mask-ing'. Adding a sheet mask in your skincare routine, whether in the moring or at night' is a simple way to add another layer of hydration and also help calm and soothe skin that turned sensitive due to the harsh wind and drop of tempearature.

D. Calming care is necessary

Thicker cream doesn't mean it is more hydrating or better for the skin. The key to find a good moisturizer is ingredient, the formula and texture that your skin will feel at ease and at comfort and effective hydration. When the wind gets colder and the air becomes drier, make sure you end your skincare routine with a good moisturizer that will continue to deliver anti-bacterial care for your acne but will leave a layer of hydration to lock in the moisture level and ingredients without leaving skin feel uncomfortable.

  1. E. Acne scars are never a flaw but prevent it when you can

Preventing acne at the first place is the best treatment when it comes to acne care. However, if you already have acne formed on the skin, don't just give up yet because you can still prevent acne scars and pigmentation. Acne spots and scars is never a flaw however, as someone who believes in preventive measures, with the right care, you can regenerate your skin cells in a healthy way. Adding ingredients like vitamin c or centella asiatica on inflammed acne or wounds is definitely a way to do it. But also, adding a spot gel with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties is a great way to boost the healing prodcess thanks to gel's cooling and soothing property.
