How elmt Fights Time to Prevent Vitamin C From Oxidation

Vitamin

Did you know that vitamin C's biggest weakness is time?

Vitamin C is widely loved for its potent antioxidant properties and efficacy in brightening the complexion, helping to reduce the appearance of pigmentation, fine lines and uneven texture, for an overall healthy, glowing complexion. But, it has one ultimate flaw: it’s highly unstable and can fall ineffective without proper handling.

To solve this problem, elmt Lab set out on a mission. Their distinguished technology overcomes the difficulties of stabilizing a high concentration of 20% pure vitamin C, preserving its potent efficacy until the moment it is applied to the skin.

Read on to learn how elmt targeted this problem, and join elmt Lab for a very special livestream this Monday, May 8th, from 10 to 11 p.m. CST. We’ll be exploring the effects of time on vitamin C, and kick off the beginning of an exclusive time sale with live exclusive benefits you won’t want to miss.

A Fight Against Time

While in an ideal world our vitamin C products would stay as fresh as when we first opened them, vitamin C is highly notorious for oxidizing from contact with oxygen and water. Because of this, it's difficult in many cases to reap the benefits of vitamin C products as they often fall ineffective before we have a chance to apply it to our skin.

This vastly shortened lifespan can be due to a number of reasons - contact with air as the product bottle is opened and closed with use, and contact with water within the product formula itself being the main two reasons.

To avoid having to throw your vitamin C product down the drain because it has oxidized before you had a chance to use it, make sure you’re following the three Ps when choosing a vitamin C product to ensure you’re making the best decision: percentage, packaging, and product formula.

The Importance of Percentage

You might ask, “doesn't the expected efficacy of pure vitamin C continue to increase as the  concentration increases?” You might be surprised to know that products containing pure vitamin C as the main active ingredient do not show a positive correlation between the added amount and the expected effect.

Vitamin C is actually proven most effective at a percentage of 10~20%, 20% being the highest percentage with the highest rate of beneficial change before risk of irritation increases. Once the concentration exceeds 20%, the stability and overall efficacy of the formulation actually decreases.

To reap maximum benefits while staying stable through time, the elmt Pure Vitamin C 20% Element contains a maximal level of 20% pure vitamin C for dewy, glowing skin.

Packaging = Shield

As we previously mentioned, packaging should help protect the product from sunlight and oxygen. While a dropper might be efficient for product control, the continuous exposure to oxygen vastly cuts down the product’s lifespan.

To ensure that no contact with air, water and light is made, elmt Pure Vitamin C 20% Element is stored in an dark bottle that minimizes exposure to light and UV rays, and has an airtight pump dispenser that prevents air from getting inside.

What to Look For in Product Formula

Vitamin C is a broad term when it comes to skincare, as there are various different forms it can take. While vitamin C derivatives are also effective, pure vitamin C goes by the scientific name of ascorbic acid, and is the only form of vitamin C with a plethora of studies showing that it actually works. That’s why elmt Pure Vitamin C 20% Element uses vitamin C at its purest form - ascorbic acid.

Also, did you know that vitamin C’s natural form is a crystal structure?

These large crystals are ground into powder, which is usually dissolved into a water base. These are the serums that we’re accustomed to. While a water based serum has the benefit of being lightweight, and allowing vitamin C to absorb faster into the skin as the crystals have already been dissolved, the continuous contact with water within the product formulation leads to a faster oxidation process.

elmt tackles this problem at the source - Pure Vitamin C 20% Element has a waterless formula that suspends finely milled water-soluble vitamin C powder inside a nourishing biolipid base. It melts into the skin and activates upon contact with moisture on the skin’s surface, while staying idle inside the bottle. This way you can control when you want to activate your vitamin C, and not have to worry about beating the clock.
