Panthenol in Skin Care, Here are 4 Reasons Why You Need It

by Hailei Kim on Jun 22, 2020

You may not have heard of panthenol before but would be amazed at how much it has already been doing for you. Take a quick scan at the list of ingredients on the bottle of the moisturizer or face cream that you own. Don’t be surprised to see so many of your moisturizing products including panthenol. Panthenol, also known as pro-vitamin B5, is the alcohol form of vitamin B5. Once applied topically, panthenol is quickly absorbed by the skin and converts to vitamin B5, taking effect as a moisturizing ingredient. Although panthenol is effective as a moisturizer, because it is so versatile, it is mostly used as a humectant that holds and binds not only moisture but other moisturizing ingredients. Panthenol should now become the newest index to see how effective your skincare products actually are in hydrating and protecting your skin.

1. Moisturizing and hydrating

Mainly as a moisturizing ingredient, panthenol hydrates the skin. As a humectant, it attracts moisture to the skin and holds water in the skin, allowing the skin to produce moisture and hydrate from within. Other humectants that you may be familiar with include hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Due to the protective skin barrier panthenol creates, it reduces the risk of dehydration and dryness in the skin from evaporation and prevents natural water loss over time. Not only is it important to hydrate your skin using professional skincare products but it is also crucial for your skin to gain resilience by acquiring the abilities to produce moisture in the long run.
  1. 2. Anti-inflammatory

Panthenol’s moisturizing nature also contributes to anti-inflammatory attributes. If your skin is dry, it becomes sensitive as it loses a moisture barrier that protects the skin from external stimuli. Medical research has shown that panthenol has been effective against UV-induced redness and irritation. Panthenol works as a skin protectant that reduces itchiness and irritation caused by external stimuli. It is also a well-known fact that it can also soothe your skin by attracting water.
  1. 3. Wound healing

Did you know that panthenol can also help with wound healing? Those who are facing an endless battle with acne and acne scars are in for a treat. Wound always heals from inside in the deep layers of your skin. So it is necessary for your skin to not only defend itself from external stimuli but also start the healing process from within. The cells that have been proven effective for giving skin more supple and resilience are also found in panthenol. A daily dosage of panthenol will definitely improve your skin and your skin texture. If you pair panthenol with vitamin C, which is also famous for helping the production of collagen, you can reap all its benefits and boost your skin’s healing process.
  1. 5. Good for hair and nail as well

Last but not least, panthenol is also good for your hair and nail. Your hair and nail are made from keratin protein. You witness thinning hair and cracked nails when your hair or nail loses protein due to external stimuli. If your hair splits at the end or occasionally have cracked nails, try using a product that has panthenol. A lot of hair and nail products contain panthenol but if you don’t own a hair or nail product try applying the remaining bit of panthenol skincare product after you have applied it to your skin.
